Dr. Jonathon Whitehead is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in hand and upper extremity, including the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. He joined Southlake in 2025 and is dedicated to working with each of his patients to develop a personalized care plan that restores them to their best self.
A native of Hoover, Alabama, and a graduate of Hoover High School, he attended Auburn University and graduated Summa Cum Laude with bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences. He earned his medical degree from The University of South Alabama College of Medicine where he was inducted into the Arnold P. Gold Humanism in Medicine Honor Society. Following medical school, Dr. Whitehead completed his residency training in orthopaedic surgery at the Medical College of Georgia. Following residency, Dr. Whitehead received additional specialized training completing a Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Dr. Whitehead has always enjoyed helping people and using his hands to fix things. He spent many summers working with his dad in construction. Years later, he found many of the same elements he enjoyed about construction- structure, spatial awareness, fixing, were also incorporated into medicine. He finds the hand to be intricate and fascinating, and he enjoys both the variety of surgery and the precision required in hand and upper extremity surgery.
When he is not seeing patients, Dr. Whitehead enjoys spending time with his family, especially in the outdoors, and grilling and watching football.
Dr. Whitehead is available to see patients at both our Grandview and Hoover office locations.

Growing up I enjoyed playing baseball, and pitching was my favorite position- I played for Hoover High School. I was not known for being the fastest pitcher in the state but was known for my thoughtful pitch selection and pitching accuracy. Orthopaedic Surgery has many of the same crucial elements I enjoyed developing as a pitcher-precision, fineness, and focus. I also enjoy working with athletes with similar interests, dreams and goals as I once had when I was younger. This excites and rejuvenates me.
Southlake Orthopaedics is a well-established, successful practice in Birmingham, Alabama- my home and place I want to raise my children.
