Shoulder Replacement

Understanding Shoulder Conditions and Available Treatments

Shoulder Replacement in Hoover and Birmingham, Alabama

The shoulder plays a vital role in allowing a person to move their arms freely. As the most flexible joint in the body, the shoulder helps with performing a variety of functions and movements, such as abduction (moving arms out), adduction (allowing arms to rest by the sides), flexion, extension, and rotation. Over time, with increased wear and tear, the shoulder joint is susceptible to injury that can hinder a person’s mobility and create painful symptoms.

Located in Hoover and Birmingham-Grandview, AL, and serving patients throughout central Alabama, Southlake Orthopaedics provides comprehensive shoulder care to help patients achieve less pain, more living. Our board-certified orthopedic surgeons perform total shoulder replacement surgery at our state-of-the-art surgery centers. Shoulder Replacement at Southlake Orthopaedics

Shoulder replacement surgery, also known as shoulder arthroplasty, is performed by an orthopedic surgeon. The surgical procedure involves replacing a damaged or diseased shoulder joint with implantable components. The purpose is to reduce shoulder pain and discomfort and to restore mobility when conservative treatment options have failed to produce the desired outcomes.

Testing is administered to ensure a patient is medically fit for surgery and a good candidate for shoulder replacement. Pre-operative evaluation can include X-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and electrodiagnostics to provide surgeons with a clear image of a patient’s condition.

The surgical procedure begins with the patient being administered anesthesia. Once the effects of the drug have been confirmed, the surgeon will make an incision over the shoulder joint to access the damaged material. The surgeon then removes the head of the upper arm bone (humerus) to make way for a metal stem, which is inserted into the humerus. A metal ball is placed on the stem. From there, the surgeon reshapes the shoulder socket and lines it with a metal cup. Finally, the surgeon puts a plastic liner in the socket and slips the ball into place. The incision is closed and covered with a dressing.

In some cases, a reverse total shoulder replacement is necessary. This procedure is intended for severe rotator cuff injuries or when the shoulder joint is severely damaged. With this technique of shoulder arthroplasty, the ball and the socket are still replaced but the implants are reversed. This socket is attached to the humerus and the ball is attached to the shoulder blade.

Conditions That May Warrant Shoulder Replacement

Physicians may recommend shoulder replacement surgery for patients experiencing pain and discomfort due to the following conditions:

  • Arthritis: A condition where cartilage on the ends of bones wears away, causing bones to rub against one another. Shoulder arthritis can be caused by fractures, rheumatoid disease, or torn rotator cuff tendons.
  • Rotator cuff injuries: A rotor cuff injury can damage the cartilage and bone in the shoulder joint.
  • Fractures: A severe fracture in the upper arm or shoulder joint bones may require replacement.
  • Osteonecrosis: A condition in which the bones of the shoulder joint don’t receive enough blood supply.
  • Failed previous shoulder surgery: A previous shoulder replacement surgery may have failed due to infection, implant loosening, or other reasons. In these cases, another procedure is likely necessary.
