What Is Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)?

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is a painless, non-invasive way for doctors to diagnose health conditions. MRIs use a combination of large magnets and radio waves to produce computer images of internal structures, allowing doctors to scan for damage or abnormalities. There are several types of MRI scans, including:

  • Closed-bore:Closed-bore MRI machines feature a ring of magnets with a hollow center through which the patient may pass. These produce the clearest images. We have on-site MRI machines at both our Birmingham-Grandview and Hoover, AL locations.
  • With contrast:At times, doctors may first inject the patient with a safe material that enhances magnetic properties. This enhances image sharpness for better specificity.

What Are MRI Scans Used to Diagnose?

MRI scans are most frequently used to examine soft, non-bony parts of the body. They deliver incredibly clear images of muscles, ligaments, tendons, organs, and the spinal cord, making them ideal for identifying conditions such as:


Though MRI scans are useful for diagnosing a wide variety of conditions for many types of patients, they aren’t for everyone. The magnetic field produced by an MRI machine can displace implants or interfere with medical devices, including pacemakers and insulin pumps. If patients have any metal implant or device, a computed tomography (CT) scan is their best option.

How Long Do MRI Scans Take?

Most patients are allowed to eat, drink, and take medications before an MRI test. Some may wish to request an anxiety medication in preparation. If the MRI scan is to be performed with contrast, the doctor will provide the prescription in advance. These are the steps taken during the MRI scan:

  • The patient must remove all clothing, hearing aids, piercings, and jewelry. Personal belongings will be locked up for security.
  • A gown is provided for privacy during the MRI test.
  • The patient lies down on a scan table. Pillows and straps may be used to keep the patient still during the procedure.
  • The scan table slowly moves through a large tubelike structure with openings on both ends.
  • The MRI machine may make a loud noise. Earplugs will be provided for protection.
  • If contrast dye is used, the patient may briefly experience a cold sensation, a salty or metallic taste in the mouth, headache, itching, or nausea. These effects should pass after a few moments.

Depending on the area being examined, the MRI scan will take anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes. The patient will always be in contact with the MRI specialist. Afterward, patients may return home immediately. They should alert the doctor about any adverse effects they experience, especially after the use of contrast dye.
